For this reason, here are the five most unforgettable moments in football that makes up the biggest events in 2021;
1 Lionel Messi Bids Farewell To Barcelona
When you think about Barcelona the first player that comes to your mind is Argentina captain Lionel Messi, but a surprising thing happened in 2021 that led to the club captain leaving the club.
The Spanish La Liga side was struck with a financial crisis, and they were unable to foot the salary of the Argentine wizard even after reducing his take-home by 50 per cent, which means they had to let him go.
There have been times that Messi wanted to leave the club but was talked out of that, but in 2021, the situation was beyond the powers of both the club and the player, with both parties resulting in ending their relationship.
It was an emotional farewell at the Camp Nou with Messi shedding tears as he part ways with the club that gave him everything as a footballer and also as a human.
This remains one of the unforgettable moments in the year 2021.
2 Cristiano Ronaldo Returns To Manchester United After Rumours Claims He Was Joining Manchester City
It was a funny summer transfer window with Cristiano Ronaldo opting to leave Juventus after spending three seasons with the club. The former Real Madrid was close to joining Manchester United fierce, and the city rivals Manchester City according to reports, but the Red Devils former boss Sir Alex Ferguson had to step in to stop the move from happening.
Ferguson convinced both the club board and Ronaldo. The Portuguese talisman made a stunning return to the Premier League side, and it could have been a heartbreaking move for Manchester United fans if he had opted to join Manchester City.
The story had a happy ending as Ronaldo marked his return to the club with a brace against Newcastle United at Old Trafford on his second debut.
3 Sergio Aguero Announced His Early Retirement From Football Due To Health Concerns
This has to be one of the most emotional events that happened in football in 2021. Argentine international Sergio Aguero returned to the Spanish La Liga after an amazing number of years in England playing for Manchester City. He joined Barcelona with the hope of playing alongside his best friend Lionel Messi, but that didn’t happen as the former Barcelona captain left the club to join French Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain.
Aguero’s debut for Barcelona was delayed due to injury but later got fit and featured in the El Clasico and scored. The sad moment of his career happened during Barcelona’s 1-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano. The Argentine striker was one of the best players in the game but suffered a career-ending ailment, which saw him withdrawn from the match.
The former Atletico Madrid had to retire from the game after it was confirmed that he suffered a heart problem, and the event of his retirement announcement at the Camp Nou was emotional with the whole football world bidding farewell to one of the greatest strikers in history.
4 Denmark Players Praying For Eriksen After He Had A Cardiac Arrest On The Pitch In Euro 2020
2021 is a year Christian Eriksen will never forget in his life. The former Tottenham star almost lost his life at the Euro 2020 due to a heart problem. In Denmark’s group stage game against Finland, the Ex-Inter Milan midfielder collapsed and was close to giving up before his captain Simon Kjaer stepped in.
Eriksen was attended to by the medical staff of Denmark but one of the unforgettable moments of the event was seeing his teammates surround him when he was being treated and praying for him.
The former Ajax midfielder was revived on the pitch before he was being taken to the hospital for better treatment.
5 Chelsea Wins The Champions League Title Against Manchester City.
It was one of the surprising stories of football in 2021 as Chelsea were being crowned the European Champions. The Blues before winning the UEFA Champions League were being mocked after the club sacked their legend, Frank Lampard.
Thomas Tuchel was appointed with the hope of making the top 4 in the Premier League not knowing the German was bringing more to the table.
Through their journey of being crowned European champions, Chelsea defeated top clubs like Atletico Madrid, FC Porto and the most successful team in the competition’s history Real Madrid.
The final took place on the 29th of May 2021 at the Estádio do Dragão, Chelsea were not the favourites as they were facing the Premier League winners Manchester City who are playing in their first final under Pep Guardiola.
Tuchel’s side scored the only goal of the game in the 42nd minute courtesy of summer signing Kai Havertz who has also been criticised by fans for not justifying his big-money move to Stamford Bridge.
It was a joyous moment for Chelsea fans when the centre referee Mateu Lahoz blew the final whistle as the Blues claimed their second UEFA Champions League title.
There were a lot of unforgettable moments in football in the year 2021 but the ones listed above stood out for me, and the Chelsea triumph in the UEFA Champions League was my best because it was unexpected as the team was not on the path to claim the club’s football most prestigious trophy.
2022 is forthcoming, and we hope it will also end with lots of unforgettable moments in football. I think that is for sure because there are a lot of football events in 2022 which starts with the Africa cup of Nations in Cameroon, and it will end with the number one footballing event which is the World Cup in Qatar.
