Whether it’s Morning glory, Morning wood, or whatever name you choose to call it, most people are aware of this phenomenon that occurs in men. You’ve either experienced it or woken up next to one.
While many assume that a man waking up with an erection just means he’s aroused and ready for some action, there’s actually much more to it.
The morning penile erection, known medically as Nocturnal Penile Tumescence, simply refers to the erection you get when you’re waking up. It is not really just a morning thing. Rather, it’s something that happens all throughout the night. Your morning glory is in fact the last in a series of night-time erections.
Is Morning Glory Healthy?
Morning glory is a perfectly normal and good sign of strong erectile function in a healthy man, and of good cardiovascular and nervous system health too. Scientists agree that it is a sign that shows that the blood vessels that allow blood to flow to your male organ are healthy.
On the other hand, the absence of morning glory can also, in some cases, be an indicator of erectile dysfunction issues.
Why Do Men Wake Up With Erections?
The cause of morning erections is not fully understood. However, experts believe that they occur from a combination of different key factors.
1. Testosterone Levels
Thetestosterone levels in your body reach their highest, while you sleep. And since the average level of testosterone in your bloodstream is highest just after sleep, it may cause a morning erection. As men get older, the circulating levels of testosterone decrease, resulting in a lower intimacy drive and fewer morning erections.
2. Role of Sleep Cycle
During deep Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, certain parts of your brain actually shut down, including the part that inhibits erections. So your male organ is free to do whatever it wants, and if it wants to fill up with blood and become erect, it definitely will.
3. Physical Stimulation
Also, just because your brain is relaxing while you sleep, doesn’t mean that it is unaware of everything that happens around you. If you touch yourself in your sleep, or if your partner touches you, or even pressure from your sheets, pillow or clothing, may set off the natural process of an erection, without you being conscious of it.
4. Effects of Full Bladder
It has also been suggested that morning glory may be a mechanism for alerting men of their full overnight bladder. This may explain why the erection goes away after emptying one’s bladder.
Do All Men Get Morning Glory?
Morning glory affects all males, even males in the womb and male children, and may happen frequently until your 40s or 50s. That’s about when your body’s natural production of testosterone begins to slow down, although some men still get them way into their older age.
Why Don’t I Have Morning Erections?
According to studies, some causes of infrequent or no morning glory are associated with some of the following:
1. Hormonal issues, such as low testosterone, as well as health conditions such as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.
2. Age also affects the frequency of morning glory. Older men, particularly men in their 60s and 70s, are less likely to experience frequent morning wood than younger men.
3. Psychological issues like anxiety and depression can often lead to physical erection problems and may make it harder to wake up with a morning erection.
4. Medication can often affect morning glory. If you take antidepressants or painkillers, there’s a chance that these could interfere with your body’s ability to get an erection and cause both a loss of morning glory and erectile dysfunction.
How Do I Get My Morning Glory Back?
If you’re concerned that your morning erections aren’t what they used to be, don’t worry. Some of the things you can do is to:
*Engage in regular exercise
*Cut down on processed foods, alcohol and smoking
*Eat a healthy balanced diet
*Keep your weight in check
*Ensure you get enough sleep
