Blood Cleanse: 7 Foods/Herbs That Can Help Cleanse Your Blood And Detoxify It

The blood is one of the most important components of the human body as it is responsible for the transportation of materials such as oxygen, hormones, sugar fats, clotting factors, and immune system cells, from one part of the body to other. The three main functions it performs include:

1. Transport – it transports gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from the lungs, and also helps in transporting nutrients from the digestive tract to other parts of the body, as well as moving wastes, hormones and other cells.

2. Protection – the white blood cell components of the blood acts as the body soldier which fights off harmful or invading microorganisms, while platelets help blood clotting which helps to minimise blood loss from injuries.

3. Regulation – the blood is responsible for the regulation of several aspects of the body's functions such as the body's temperature, pH, and water balance.

Considering the three major roles played by the blood, keeping it in top conditions and devoid of impurities should be a top priority. Fortunately, the kidneys and the liver helps to purify the blood by the filtration and subsequent removal and breakdown of waste. However, you can enhance the works of these two important organs to further cleanse your blood.

To this effect, there are foods that you can consume for this purpose, and such foods would be our focus as we examine certain foods and herbs that can help cleanse the blood and help in further detoxification of the body from waste, toxins, and other harmful substances. The foods are examined below:

1. Water

It is often said that water is life and there is no better detoxifier than water, as its high intake is linked to a boost in the kidney's performance. This is because the kidneys' ability to eliminate waste from the blood is highly dependent on water, hence, the higher the water available, the more efficiently the kidney works to remove wastes from the blood.

Additionally, water also helps in keeping the blood vessels open for easy movement of blood. An adequate intake of water for people may differ but it is often recommended that one takes at least eight glasses of water per day for the proper functioning of the body and cleansing of the blood.

2. Cruciferous vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables are nutritious and can also be beneficial health-wise thanks to their rich antioxidant properties. They can be added to virtually any type of food you eat and their nutritional content is known to help cleanse the blood by keeping the liver and kidneys in optimal conditions. Cruciferous vegetables that you can eat include broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts.

3. Berries

Berries, specifically blueberries and cranberries are also known to help enhance the blood-cleansing process thanks to their rich content of powerful antioxidant compounds which are linked to improved liver function and the protection of the liver from damage. Cranberries, on the other hand, are known to help enhance the health of the urinary system by not allowing bacteria access to the system.

4. Hibiscus (Zobo)

Hibiscus is one of the most nutritious herbs on the planet and is also a potent blood cleanser. Its tea, which is popularly called the "Zobo" drink in Nigeria is a great drink and its intake is known to have diuretic effects on the body. This means it can help the kidney in filtering excess sodium and fluids from the blood, thus keeping the blood clean.

5. Ginger

Ginger is another great herb that can be utilised for blood cleansing due to the various positive effects it has on the body and the blood. It can help to control blood's sugar levels and can also help to treat non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). There are many ways of incorporating ginger into your diet including using it as a powder, taking it as tea, and blending and adding it to some food items.

6. Grapefruit

You should also consider regular incorporation of grapefruit into your meals due to its rich antioxidant compounds which helps to control inflammation in the body. Studies have also linked its antioxidant compounds to the protection of the liver from injury and certain harmful effects of alcohol.
